Who We Are
For over 25 years, St. Luke's Foundation has been proactive in improving Whatcom County healthcare through grants, scholarships, and involvement in local healthcare issues. The foundation looks forward to the next 25 years of vital support.
Our History & Mission
Our History: An Accomplished Past
The St. Luke’s Foundation was founded in 1982 with the sale of St. Luke’s Hospital, a community non-profit hospital. Proceeds from the sale funded the non-profit public foundation whose name honored the tradition of health care St. Luke’s Hospital provided this community for nearly a century. Today the Foundation is independently governed by local community leaders and has given over $14 million for hundreds of health related services and projects, health care education activities and nursing scholarships with an asset base close to $12 million.
Our Mission: Promoting A Vital Presence
St. Luke’s Foundation actively seeks out community health needs both large and small to fulfill its mission of: ”Strengthening our community through vital support of health related projects and education.”
Advancing the Health of Our Community One Investment at a Time
Since 1982 SLF has invested over $14.5 million in literally hundreds of health related programs, projects and health education activities large and small by:
Our Impact
Paramedic Todd Fisher. Over the past 25 years, St. Luke's Foundation has donated over $148,355 to Whatcom County Emergency Medical Services.
"St. Luke's Foundation has been a strong supporter of Emergency Medical Services in Whatcom County, standing by as a pillar and resource supporting continuing improvement in the pre-hospital setting."
- Dawn Cannizzaro, President Whatcom County EMS/TC Council
Vera Young, Bellingham Food Bank Volunteer. In 2008 St. Luke's Foundation committed $50,000 to build a new food bank. The facility opened in the summer of 2008 and now serves over 8,000 client visits a month.
"When this community is committed to a project anything is possible. The Bellingham Food Bank was struggling with how to meet the growing needs of those who go hungry in Whatcom County. St Luke's Foundation joined other community partners to ensure this vital community resource has the space to meet the need."
- Mike Cohen, Executive Director Bellingham Food Bank

In 2002, St. Luke's Foundation convened over 200 citizens, community leaders and organizations at a Healthcare Access Summit. The event led to the creation of the Whatcom Alliance for Healthcare Access - a nonprofit organization committed to acting locally and advocating regionally to improve healthcare access in Whatcom County.
"WAHA has a track record of bringing all parties to the table to tackle the challenge of access to health coverage and care for everyone in our community. With leading support from St. Luke's Foundation, WAHA Partnered to create a 'No Wrong Door' for children and adults seeking healthcare services and insurance."
- Regina Delahunt, Whatcom County Health Department Director
and WAHA Board Member
Karen Ssebanakitta, Director of Oncology St. Joseph Medical Center.
"We received a million dollars, helping us create, instead of a radiation clinic, a state-of-the-art cancer center."
